DIY Cannabis-Infused Chocolate Strawberries – Just in time for Quarantined Valentine’s Day

Welcome to your one-stop-shop to learn how to make edibles at home for every holiday season. Because, well, chocolate covered strawberries are good for just about every holiday.

Speaking of holidays, V-day is this weekend. Just think about how much has changed in just one year. Sitting down in a candlelit romantic restaurant served by a mask-less waiter or waitress seems like a distant memory of a past life. With the end of the lockdowns in sight, many restaurants are opening up for the occasion. If you are like us, we are still getting takeout until things start to look more normal. That doesn’t mean we aren’t celebrating the bond with our special someone.

Chocolate strawberries are Valentine’s Day tradition. We are going to show you how to make this V-Day classic infused with cannabis. Perfect for a safe date night as we wait for the world to stop burning.

Enjoy this sexually explicit treat this weekend that will lead to awkward giggles and a 4-hour lounge session on the couch. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate love.

CAUTION THIS RECIPE TAKE 2 DAYS, YOU MUST LET THE BUTTER SIT IN THE FRIDGE OVERNIGHT!

Successfully making THC infused chocolate strawberry edibles takes easy 3 steps.

  • Decarboxylation – activate the THC

  • Cannabutter – the most important ingredient in the recipe

  • Chocolate – to transform strawberries or bananas, churros, nuts, or anything else you decide to make into a dessert

Decarboxylation

Before we get into the recipe, we have to cover some chemistry. The active ingredient in marijuana, as you may know, is THC. This chemical is the culprit behind bloodshot eyes, the munchies, and mass incarceration. Most people don't realize when you smoke cannabis in a joint or a bong, you are transforming the chemical compounds in the weed. By lighting marijuana on fire, you activate THC. This process is called decarboxylation.

THC is present in dry buds. It takes heat to convert this compound into the one we know and love, THC. This is why eating a nug of weed will not get you high. It must be decarboxylated.

Since we aren’t lighting our chocolate strawberries on fire, we first have to convert the THCa in our dry cannabis to THC. If this step is skipped over you will still have a delicious, sensual snack to feed each other but won’t be baked out of your minds doing so.

Don’t worry, this process is much simpler than it sounds.

Activate Your Weed

You will need a 1/8th to 5 grams of your preferred strain of dry flower. Preheat your oven to 245 degrees. Place the bud on a non-stick baking sheet. Give the THCa about 30-40 minutes in the over to properly decarboxylate.

After a half-hour or so, take the baking sheet out of the oven. Grind up your weed. You now have active THC ready to be turned into cannabis butter.

Making the Cannabutter

In our opinion, this is the best way to make edibles. Every recipe you are going to want to eat while high calls for butter, it just makes sense. We are going to make ½ cup. Plenty to make a hefty amount of dipping chocolate and have some leftover to try another recipe. Anything that calls for butter, can be made into a THC infused edible.

You will start with ¾ cups of unsalted butter. Melt in a medium saucepan, then add all the flower. Ideally, you want it to simmer between 160 and 200 degrees for 2-3 hours. Try to keep it from boiling. Cannabis is picky, it doesn’t like to get too hot. If the temp gets high enough it will lower the potency.

After at least 2 hours of simmering, you are left with a buttery mixture filled with ground-up weed. We need to filter out the plant matter. Place a cheesecloth or tee-shirt and filter the butter through the cloth into a plastic bowl. You want to get as much of the butter separated from the flower.

Let the infused butter in the bowl sit over-night in the refrigerator. Hopefully, you saw our warning and aren’t surprised by this, and Valentine’s Day isn’t ruined.

You now have usable cannabis-infused butter. It should be about ½ cup.

The Chocolate Dipping Sauce

We are going to use half the butter for this recipe, this will yield about 4 cups of chocolate dipping sauce. You don’t want the butter to be too potent or it will ruin the recipe. 4 cups is a lot, so you will likely have extra to top ice cream down the road.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups chocolate chips

  • 2 cups milk

  • 16 tablespoons heavy cream

  • 8 tablespoons cannabutter

  • 16 tablespoons sugar

Instructions

Place the chocolate chips in a medium plastic bowl.

Heat the milk on the stove until it boils.

Pour the milk over the chocolate in the bowl, slowly stirring until all the chocolate is melted and you have a nice smooth mixture.

In the same saucepan used for the milk, combine the cream, cannabutter, and sugar. Carefully bring to a boil while whisking. You don’t want this to burn.

Add the chocolate and milk mixture, known as ganache, into the saucepan. Stir on low heat until mixed.

Pour sauce into a storage container.

Allow the sauce to thicken. Should just take a couple of minutes.

Voila!

You have a chocolate dipping sauce ready to turn boring fruit into sensual Valentine’s Day treats that will get you incredibly stoned.

Don’t End Up on the News

Everyone has a crazy edible story. They start by eating a reasonable amount of edibles waited 30 minutes, don’t feel anything, then tripled the recommended amount, and spent the rest of the night hiding under the kitchen table laughing hysterically. These stories are hilarious but not fun when it’s you are that person, and it feels like an eternity before you are sober once again.

Don’t ruin THC infused chocolate strawberry Valentine’s Day quarantine date night by drinking 8 cups of chocolate sauce and calling 911 because you forgot your name. It is not a fun experience and a horrible way to go viral.

Remember, you put 5 grams of weed in the butter. People tend to forget the strength that the amount of weed will deliver if consumed in 20 minutes. Edibles will creep up on you, eat a few, wait 45 minutes and see how you feel. Don’t become a cautionary tale, take responsibility and enjoy these strange times with someone you love.
